Rocklin, Placer County
Rocklin began as a railroad town in 1864, when the Central Pacific reached the foothills and built a roundhouse for the extra engines needed to climb the Sierra. Granite was the other local industry. Dozens of quarries, many worked by Finnish immigrants, supplied stone for the State Capitol and for buildings in San Francisco. The last quarry closed in the early 2000s.
